Community
Development Policy of 1996 continued to guide the peoples
development activities through self reliance whereby many people are increasingly
committed to fight poverty. Also, the government continued to monitor
the implementation of economic and structural reforms in the country.
Education
and Training
314.
In
2002, the community development colleges conducted training at certificate
and diploma levels. A total of
100 community development professionals graduated at certificate level. Out of those professionals, 78 were females
and 22 males. At the diploma level,
63 community development professionals graduated constituting 37 females
and 26 males. Focal development
professionals graduated constituting 37 females and 26 males.
Focal development colleges which aim at improving peoples capacities
to be aware, decide, plan and implement their development plans trained
a total of 6,050 people constituting 3,515 females and 2,534 males. In
addition these colleges conducted long courses, for 5,875 people constituting
2,648 females and 3,227 males. The
training was in tailoring, carpentry, masonry and mechanics.
Economic Empowerment
for Women

In 2002, priority continued to be directed at empowering
women economically, providing training
and combating harassment to women. In 2002, women continued to receive credits
from the government through the Women Development Fund whereby each district
was given shs. 4 million. Many non-government organizations also continued
