LAUNCH OF 5-YEAR TREASURY BOND AND CHANGES TO THE TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF ALL TREASURY BONDS (2-YEAR AND 5-YEAR)

Vision

Mission

The Ministry of Finance aspires to achieve high and sustainable economic growth and macro-economic stability, sound financial management and financial accountability. The mission of the Ministry is to support and promote excellence in public financial management, budgeting, and value for money; centre of excellence in the development of fiscal policies and strategies; promotion of professionalism and customer focused staff; and support and promotion of  IT in the public service.

Functions

Broad  Functions of the Ministry include:

  • Formulation of policy issues related to macroeconomic analysis, fiscal, monetary and debt policy and strategy, 

  • Overseeing financial aspects of the Government interest as shareholder in public, as well as private enterprises and advises the Government on various issues pertaining to its investments.

  • Preparation of expenditure targets, review of expenditure performance, and preparation of budget guidelines

  • Preparation and implementing external aid policies, mobilization and coordination of external aid and regional cooperation.

  • Managing the Government payroll

  • Overseeing all revenue and expenditure operations of the Government

Financial Institutions

The Financial sector operation in Tanzania is comprised of banking and non-banking institutions operating under the guidance of  the Banking and Financial Institutions Act of 1991.  

 

Banking institutions are closely monitored and regulated by the Bank of Tanzania. 

 

The sector is largely private owned by local and foreign investors. Under the Act, banks are free to determine the level of interest rates based on market forces. There are:

  • 20 licensed commercial banks of which 9 are foreign owned, 6 joint venture, and 5 locally owned.

  • 11 non - banking  institutions.

  • 12 other financial institutions, and

  • Numerous Bureau de Changes.
