To  protect and safeguard all inmates and the remanded who are under the custody of prisons.

To control the movement of nationals and non-nationals in and out of Tanzania, including the issuance of citizenship to non-nationals.

To prepare and oversee the implementation of rescue operations.

To provide emergency and relief services to refugees in cooperation with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).
