The Tanzanian Household Budget Survey (HBS), conducted in 2000/01 by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), is the largest-ever household budget survey in Tanzania and one of the largest in Africa. It covered more than 22,000 households across all 20 regions of the Tanzanian Mainland. Information was collected for both urban and rural areas.

Measuring trends in poverty

Poverty reduction is a main objective of Tanzanian Government policy. In the last decade it has placed considerable emphasis on equitable and sustainable economic growth, poverty reduction and improvement of basic social services.

So the 2000/01 HBS focuses its analysis on national and regional indicators for poverty monitoring.  They include household consumption, income poverty and a range of non-consumption measures, including those of the priority sectors of education, health and water. These enable it to:

1.   Provide a set of baseline measures for the future, tracking progress resulting from the Government’s poverty reduction policies

2.    Assess trends over the 1990s. Comparisons with the 1991/92 HBS offer information about changes in poverty over the last decade and the effect of policies pursued.

The survey should be an important contribution to monitoring and ultimately eradicating poverty in Tanzania.
