Home Our NationMusic Taarab Music

Taarab is a music genre popular  at the coast  of Tanzania in Tanga, Unguja and Pemba and at Mombasa Kenya. The music  has its roots from Arab countries and India. It is believed to have been started by Seyyid Barghash bin Said (1870-1888); when he invited a taarab ensemble from Egypt to play at his palace. Later on he decided to send to Egypt Mohamed Ibrahim to learn music. Upon his return he formed the Zanzibar Taarab Orchestra.

As days wentby the music gained popularity in the coast, as a result it spread within East Africa. Currently, there are modern taarab styles that are played by various groups, for example Jahazi Modern Taarab, East African Melody, Five Stars and Babloom Modern Taarab.
