The Tanzania National Website

Introduction:
In 1996 the President of the United Republic of Tanzania directed the Government to establish a National Website. In the year 2000 the President's Office, Planning and Privatization (POPP) was assigned to coordinate the setting-up and development of the National Website (TNW). The choice of the POPP was in line with its mandate of being overall adviser to Government on matters pertaining to socio-economic development and economic management. The Tanzania National Website was launched officially by the third phase President of United Republic of Tanzania H.E. Benjamin W. Mkapa on 09.12.2001. (speech)

By developing the TNW, the government created a mechanism by which the information from authoritative sources in Tanzania is easily accessible. The TNW users are able to get a comprehensive overview of information available on other websites on Tanzania and quickly navigate the vast information resources available. As such the TNW is an umbrella website for all websites on Tanzania. The site is expected to provide information to a variety of information seekers and where necessary direct them to complete sources of information.

Tanzania National Website Objectives:
Tanzania’s profile is better exposed to its citizens and the outside world using the Internet and the World-Wide-Web (www) through TNW.  This promotes good governance, attract investment and enable effective participation in the globalised economy.   Thus, the main objective of the National Website is to promote the country’s potentials with a view of enhancing investment promotion, trade, tourism, cultural exchanges etc taking advantage of state - of – the - art in information and communication technology (ICTs).  

 

Scope and Coverage: 

The Tanzania National Website provides information about Tanzania in both Kiswahili and English encompassing the following websites:

o  Country; Region and Districts profiles; history; tourism; investment; governance; agriculture; commerce; economy; education; mining; industries; energy; transport; finance; water; livestock; natural resources; health; lands; science and technology; external sector development; communication; food security; private sector development and human resource and International cooperation 

The scope of Information coverage will in future be expanded to cover more areas of user’s interest including region and districts homepages.

Reputable Tanzania private enterprises are encouraged to advertise on the National Website.

Institutional Setup of the Tanzania National Website:

The management structure of the National Website consists of three bodies namely: The Steering Committee, the Technical Team and the Coordinating Unit.

i) The National Website Steering Committee

This is the highest organ in the management structure of the National Website and owner of the site on behalf of the Government.

Its functions include policy decisions on matters related to content, sustenance and overall direction of the site.  

All Permanent secretaries are members of this committee. The Chief Secretary is the chairperson.

 

ii) The National Website Technical Team

The team comprises of representatives from all ministries under the chairmanship of the Executive Secretary- POPC.

iii) The National Website Coordinating Unit:

This is a team of experts carrying out the activities of the National Website on a daily basis at the POPC.   The National Website Coordinator heads the Unit.
