In 1985 the Government of Tanzania, in collaboration with UNFPA, created the Population Planning Unit (PPU), aimed at building the country’s institutional and technical capacities for the integration of population variables into socio-economic planning. The initial main function of PPU was to coordinate the formulation, and thereafter the implementation, of the National Population Policy (NPP).
