The
President of the United Republic of Tanzania, His Excellency Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete
has warmly endorsed the candidacy of His Excellency Ban Ki-
Moon, who has put forward his name for election to a second term as Secretary
General of the United Nations.
In
a statement released a while ago (Today, Monday, June 6, 2011) simultaneously in Dar es Salaam
and New York, President Kikwete has also called upon
the community of nations to support and confirm His Excellency Ban Ki Moon as Secretary General of the United Nations.
In
his statement the President said: “Tanzania warmly welcomes the news of the
decision of Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon to be
available for a second term at the helm of the United Nations. Over the past
four years and a half, Secretary General Ban has led the UN to new heights. He
has shown unique leadership in addressing challenges of our time with composure,
uprightness and forthrightness.”
He
adds in his statement: “There is none
that he has not attended to the satisfaction of many nations and peoples, from
issues of poverty, to climate change, disarmament, nuclear safety,
international peace, democracy, human rights, global health and sustainable
development.”
On
a personal level, the President says: “I personally have had the privilege of
working with him on a number of issues that relate to Africa, Tanzania and the
world as a whole. I have learnt that he is compassionate person.”
President
Kikwete also says His Excellency Ban Ki-Moon cares and loves Africa. “He loves and cares about
Africa as he does about less privileged people and backward nations and peoples
the world over including women and children. More importantly, he his practical
person who is always passionate about seeing action and tangible results on
matters discussed and agreed upon.”
President
concludes his statement, “In light of these outstanding accomplishments, I am
happy to announce Tanzania’s unreserved support for his bid for a second term.
I also call upon the community of nations to support and confirm H.E. Ban Ki-Moon as Secretary General of the United Nations. The
United Nations and all nations stand to benefit from his leadership.”
His
Excellency Ban Ki-Moon announced his candidacy
formally today, Monday, June 6, 2011, during a breakfast meeting with permanent
representative of Asian countries at the United Nations. The formal
announcement was later confirmed by Mr. Martin Nersky,
spokesperson of the Secretary General of the United Nations.
