Tanzania celebrates Independence Day on 9th December each year. On this day in 1961, Tanzania the then Tanganyika became independent from Great Britain. On the actual day, Dec 9th, there were fireworks, jubilation and excitement in Dar es Salaam. The official celebrations were held at the National Stadium and simultaneously, there was an  Uhuru torch taken to the summit of Kilimanjaro.

In honor of this historic achievement, the government trace its sectors highlighting achievements, constraints and challenges encountered since independence and chart out the way forward.  Its 50 years independence cerebration in 2011 was enshrined with the theme  that: “We dared; we succeeded and we are forging ahead."
