Mwalimu Julius Kambarage Nyerere was the first President of Tanganyika and later the United Republic of Tanzania from 1962-1985. He was born on 13th April, 1922 at Butiama village, in Musoma district, Mara region. His father was Chief Nyerere Burito of the Zanaki tribe and his mother was Christina  Mugaya Wanyang’ombe. He became the first Tanzanian to study at a British university and only the second to gain a university degree from Africa. Nyerere brought a number of different nationalist factions into one grouping, which was achieved in 1954. He traveled throughout the country, speaking to people and tribal chiefs, trying to win support for the movement towards independence.

Mwalimu Julius Kambarage Nyerere died on 14th October 1999 of leukemia at St. Thomas Hospital, London, England at  the age of 77. This section highlights some of the speeches he delivered regarding Ujamaa, Foreign Affairs, Education and  the Economy of Tanzania. Read his profile for more details.
