Livestock production is one of the major agricultural activities in Tanzania that is contributing towards achieving development goals of the National Growth and Reduction of Poverty (NSGRP). The livestock sector provides livelihood support to a total of 1,745,776 (37%) households out of 4,901,837 agricultural households (URT, Livestock Sample Survey Census, 2005) and is one of the major economic activities in rural areas. In view of the importance of the livestock sector to the Tanzanian economy and to the people’s livelihoods, the Ministry of Livestock Development and Fisheries in 2010 formulated a Livestock Sector Development Strategy (LSDS) for operationalizing the National Livestock Policy (NLP) of 2006.
