The retention license is an intermediate license between an exploration license and mining. The holder of an exploration license or prospecting license has the right to apply for retention license or a mining license, while the holder of retention license has the right to apply for mining retention.

 Requirements:

  • Mineral resource has been identified.
  • It is not yet established that the resource is economically viable to mine.
  • A map showing the area covered by the application.
  • Pay the prescribed application fee.
  • The Mineralization Report and the proposed work program/plan.
  • Evidence of financial capacity.

  Procedures:

  • Apply for a special mining licence within the area.
  • Submit to the Board for advance Grant of retention license.
  • You will be granted a retention license/mining license as the holder of a
    prospecting licence for that area.
  • Your licence will be for a period not exceeding five years.

  Note:
Retention licenses can be granted for up to 10 years and may be renewed twice, but a second renewal can only be given in exceptional circumstances.
